First let me start to explain why and when to pick the marksman build over survival(sv) or beastmaster(bm). The main reason has to do with the scaling of armor penetration (arp), simply put the MM hunter benefits more from the arp as it puts more talents into boosting the shots that are effected by arp. This is why a sv spec, however much i like to play sv, get's behind on MM when it comes to dps. The bm is also a nice and fun build, it lacks the benefit from arp and pet scaling doesn't make up for the damage loss. BM is nice for leveling and solo'ing or even pvp, sv is nice for pvp and for fresh 80 players (or for very advanced hunter's with bis gear that know exactly how to push it)

For MM hunter's this is the stat prio:

  • Hit 8%

Hitrating is the most important stat to reach until capped, the cap is 8% meaning 263 hitrating. Any point above 8%/263 rating is a total waste! you cannot hit the target more the 100% 1 arrow will only hit once.

there are some talents and abilities that will help you, focussed aim gives max 3% hit so you will only need 165 hitrating when specced into this talent. Also heroic pressence the draenei class passive gives 1% hit, so a draenei hunter would only need 4% hit/132 hitrating.

  • Armor penetration (arp) 1400

For more detailed info please check the seperate page about armor penetration.

You will need 1400 for 100% arp and this should be your goal! You can however reach the soft cap arp by having a trinket that procs arp, just add the proc to your base arp to see if you are soft capped on arp (this doesnt mean you should stop stacking arp).

  • Agility

It's not really a cap but agility provides the hunter with the ranged attack power and crit that we need! if you have a arp capped hunter start putting EVERY gem into agility.
